Last year's gear used?

Post by markskor »

B2's post got me thinking...he wants/needs a new backpack. He asked for recommendations but, as our man Maverick pointed out, what works for him/anyone probably won't work for Bill, thus no recommendations were forthcoming.
Again, pack fit is so subjective.

So, let's go at it from another direction. What backpack did you use this last Sierra season - 2014?
Figure around 7 days, ~50 miles, somewhere 9,000 feet and above, July and August...(or something reasonably close.)
Just to add, let's include all your Big 4...tent, sleeping bag, backpack, and pad..specifics please, if applicable.
Me:
TT Rainbow,
WM Badger - 6' left hand zip,
Gregory 60 Deva - red...WM,
Prolite+ short.

Me:
TT Moment DW (shelter);
Marmot Hydrogen (sleeping bag);
HMG Porter 3400 (pack); and
Therm-a-rest Prolite short (pad).
I'm still rather convinced that you can achieve more than you've ever dreamed of if you just lower your standards.

I was only able to get out on one trip this year, in September, but the 4 days/3 nights were all above 9,000 feet. I used:
Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 tent
Marmot Arroyo 30 degree sleeping bag, long, right hand zip
Osprey Aether 75 pack
Exped Synmat 7 Deluxe sleeping pad (77 long x 26 wide, and plush - but heavy)

All gear worked well, and I was relatively comfortable for my time in the backcountry. TR here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11743" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Go-Lite Quest backpack: about worn out, looking for a new backpack next season
Western Mountaineering Alpinlite Sleeping Bag- a little narrow, but great bag.
Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1- again, looking for a different tent next year
Exped Downmat UL7 pad- upgraded to this during year- wonderful!

Sierra Designs Orion CD: After 16 years of commendable service, it finally wore out (i.e., leaked-hey, it's 16 years old) so I'm buying a new tent with my 2015 REI dividend.
REI 15 degree down bag I purchased ten or more years ago at the outlet store so I don't know the model-it's long been discontinued. Still works great.
Osprey Volt 75: New this year (2014 REI dividend). Holds a Bearikade Expedition and everything else I need with a little room to spare. Worked great for me.
Thermarest Ridgerest
I don’t need a goal destination. I need a destination that meets my goals.

I know the traditional big 4 are pack, tent, bag and pad. But the 4 heaviest items I usually carry are:

1. Bear canister (Bearikade Wkndr)
2. Pack (GG Mariposa old silnylon version)
3. Bag (home made down quilt)
4. 100wt Fleece pullover (Mtn HW)

My low top shoes, taken as a pair, are heavier than any of the above four items.

For 7 days between 9,000 and 11,000 feet I carried:
BA Fly Creek 2 UL
Marmot Plasma 15, Long
Osprey Xenith 75
Prolite regular
Bearikade, custom 12"
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

17 day southbound JMT trip and 3 day Virginia Lake/North Yosemite trip.

TarpTent Squall2 (Have 2 of these, light and getting old)
Marmot Plasma 15 long (love this bag)
Osprey Xenith 75 (Very comfortable, useful with extra weight of DSLR kit, also have ULA Catalyst)
Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xlite (light, rolls up small)
Bearikade Expedition (I can put 12 days of food in this)

My tents are getting old and the zippers are starting to get a little less reliable. Just read on the TarpTent web site about how to fix the zipper. Been happy with them. Not sure what else I can buy for this much room for two at this weight. Considering the RainShadow 2 for a little more room.
