Sleeping Bag advice needed

Postby mikeydc » Thu Jun 26, 2014 9:57 am

I'm looking for a light, affordable, bag for use between April - October. Will only be doing higher altitude camping in the summer though. Right now I'm choosing between the REI Halo 750 fill short and the Montbell Downhugger 650 #5. I can add a liner for colder weather I suppose... just wondering if anyone has any opinions one way or the other?
Thanks!
Michael

Ya gets what's you pay for. Western Mountaineering or Marmot for me.
Better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it!

if you either scroll through the Outdoor Gear Topix area or do a search on sleeping bags within this topix area, you will find a plethora of threads on Sleeping Bag choices, Quilt choices, and other sleeping items.

There is a good thread on Big Agnes, and bag choices as well.

I'm in the 15 degree WM camp fitted to my size/shape.

Get the best you can afford, your sleeping bag is one, if not your most
important piece of gear!

Summer in the high Sierra - you should be prepared for 15-20f temps. Liners don't do a lot other than get twisted up in the bag.

Get the best you can afford. A good bag will last years - some brands have great resale value.

I have a Snow Lion from the Bezerkley area (out of business some time ago) with an unknown temperature rating (3-4" loft) from the mid 1970's. Not the lightest beast around; kept fluffed in a 24" cubed box in the off season, still serves me well. Used to be dark blue; now the outside is kinda purple, I don't mind...
