Gear Rental

It has been quite a long time since Iast backpacked. I have scheduled a trip to Yosemite in June with my two teenage sons.

Trying to keep the costs down by renting as much gear as possible. I have been looking at lowergear.com. Has anybody used them? Are they reliable? Any other suggestions for renting in the Los Angeles area?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

Welcome to HST! Try REI too: http://www.rei.com/stores/rentals.html
Also try:
http://www.sportchalet.com/category/ser ... rentals.do" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Note that in accordance with changes in the law in California, REI no longer rents sleeping bags or pads.

Just called one of my local REI stores, and they do rent bags and pads.

Observe the list of those that do and do not:

http://www.rei.com/stores/rentals.html#california" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The regulation prohibits resale of used bags and pads, so those will no longer appear in used gear sales.

I suspect that stores that are still renting will either 1) stop doing it or 2) are shipping the used items out of state for re-use or resale.

Calling ahead of time is recommended to determine the status of a particular store.

Hey & welcome!
Depending on how big/small/size you are, how long out you intend to be out/elevation, when are you going in June...(might be gone/ returning bi-monthly, but roommate stays in Mammoth), what route you are coming up from LA, and if you are playing sherpa-dad...(Hope not with teen-age sons.)
I might be able to help out at least one of you - cheap!
Used but...I have an extra 60 Gregory backpack, a 6', 35* syn sleeping bag (will launder before), a 4-pound, 2-man North Face Pebble tent, an older thermarest, and a Garcia bearcan - you can borrow free... if you care to swing through Mammoth on your way up to Yosemite.
Karma! Drop me a PM,
Mark

This is what makes this forum great! Karma is good too. It's all in the name of passing down a great memory to the younger generation and to spark a love shared w/o laying out the $ to find it isn't for them. I applaud Mark!
