High Sierra Topix

I am looking for any trip advice to climb Mt. Starr from Mono Pass. I will be coming from Red's Meadow and finishing at Mesquito Flats. Looking for class 2 route with maybe some class 3 if needed.

You can climb the West slope from Mono Pass, and then descent the East slope to Rock Creek. Both routes are class 2.

The most direct route from the west is to go to the south side of Summit Lk and look up, follow a use trail up the sandy slope directly to the North Summit. If you follow the ridge south you can get into some class 3 or move around it at will, then drop down the easy slope into the pass.

Climbed this one on August 4. Came up Mono Pass from Mosquito Flat, then up the west face. The slog is more tedious than you'd think. Maps and GPS devices indicate the north summit is the highpoint, but that's incorrect. We headed there first, following the research, only to discover the southern summit was taller. This was confirmed by traversing the class 2-3 summit ridge toward it. A GPS reading in stable weather at the top of the highest pinnacle revealed a measurement that is about 5 feet higher than the accepted value. The pinnacle is solid class 3, but has good holds. Register is at the base. Descent is tedious, exercise caution as there are lots of loose rocks and talus. If you need more info, let me know.

Gps altitude will change if you stay in one place, due to satellite position, many are blocked out by the earths shape. Units can be off 100s of feet in elevation and are based on some kind of mathematical representation of the earth. Maps are based on vertical data from sea level, in a nut shell Gps devices and maps are like comparing apples to oranges.

There's a good spiderweb of use trails that lead to the summit ridge from the slope between Summit Lake and Mono Pass. Mostly DG between talus, some loose and steep. It's a regular workout run for the locals. The ridge has many high points. If your not register obsessed, find one with a nice view and enjoy!!
