Euli Steck RIP

This guy was an amazing speed climber.He raced up mountains and posted these insanely fast climbs on youtube.

Hi D,
I was absolutely gutted when I learned of his death. I admired him more than any other climber, other than Lionel Terray, who also died too young. Such a damn shame; if you view his documentaries, you can see that he was a very humble and just plain nice guy. Did you know that he was consciously trying to be safer? He said he would focus more on long endurance climbs, just what he was training for at the time of his death in Nepal- it was to be the west ridge over Sagarmatha, and then on to Lhotse. He was a real inspiration to a lot of people.

I'll attempt to post a link to a very nice documentary on Euli Steck. Watch it and weep, but hopefully be inspired too- if not by his climbing excellence, then by his wonderful character.

I was just up in the Bernese Alps last week. Steck is a superhero in that area (many of the training shots were filmed there). In fact, they show several clips of this film on the cog train to Jungfraujoch, as if he were still alive. An amazing mountain man for sure.
