The Tahoe OGUL Peak List

There have been some questions about the Ogul list. The quick answer is to "Google it". But in an effort to inform I will conduct a little "cut and paste".

OGUL is the Washoe Indian word for mountain bighorn sheep. The Natives hunted this agile mountaineer in both the Sierra Tahoe Region and the Basin and Range to the east. Though now extinct in the area, this once great mountain sheep is a fitting symbol for our Tahoe OGUL List.

The Ogul list was established by the Peak and Gorge Section of the Mother Lode Chapter of the Sierra Club to encourage peak climbing in the Lake Tahoe region. The list has 56 peaks in California and 7 peaks in Nevada. This is a total of 63 peaks. They extend from Wheeler Peak the most southerly peak, 12 miles northwest of Bridgeport to Adams Peak the most northerly which is about 30 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada.

Does anyone know someone that helped put the list together? I would love to know the logic on including the sweet water peaks. Or why wade was included over flagpole, echo, martis, thunder, deadwood, etc.

:soapbox:

from the climber.org ogul site

Harry Erl, Howard Steidtmann, and other members of the former Peak and Gorge Section compiled the original hardcopy version of this peak list. Former member John Sarna designed the webpage to make this list generally available to the public after the dissolution of this Section. Look into it more at that site. I definitely question some well 1 Desert creek peak probably for my dislike of it.
