"The Crossing of the Sierra Nevada in the Winter of 1843-44"

(this should also be on the history forum I think) By J. C. Fremont, edited by Bob Graham. This is a fascinating account of this crossing and the editor's attempts to trace the route exactly and to identify the location- successfully it seems- of the so called "long camp' where they spent considerable time preparing for the final ascent in the vicinity of Carson Pass.

I obtained my copy here:

Scroll down to see info about the book. There is related info by the editor, where one can find links to his research on Fremont's "lost" cannon as well as a crossing of Donnor Pass in 1845.
