My favorites are already listed.

In The Throne Room of the Mountain Gods, Galen Rowell
Below Another Sky, Rick Ridgeway
Stories Off the Wall, John Roskelley
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

In addition to some of those already listed, I've enjoyed reading the Anatoli Boukreev books The Climb and Above the Cloud's. IMO, The Climb is a superior account of the '96 Everest fiasco vs. the Krakauer version.

While backpacking, I like short story compilations. The Mammoth Book of Climbing Adventures edited by Jon Lewis has some fine Himalaya accounts IIRC. I tore it in two halves to keep the weight down.

If you are interested in Pakistan, this book is incredible. I highly recommend it. It also gets deep into the Himalaya of course. It is an artful book that travels the length of the Indus river as a travel adventure and also teaches you all sorts of history: https://www.amazon.com/Empires-Indus-St ... 0393338606
