Lightweight alternative to Laws Field Guide

Post by scipio »

I enjoy identifying flora and fauna when I'm in the Sierra.

I carry the Laws Field Guide as my reference, and it's extremely useful. However, it's quite heavy IMO. Does anyone know of lightweight alternatives? Or is that as good as it gets? I'm loathe to give it up unless there's a good alternative.

I don't know of a worthy alternative.

What I've done is to buy a few pamphlets (such as http://www.waterfordpress.com/products/ ... dlife.html) and make photocopies of them onto lightweight sheets of paper to take along. Not as comprehensive as I'd like, but at least something.

Thanks Dave_Ayers - I'll look into that. But seems like I might be stuck with the "brick" for now. I love how comprehensive it is, hard to give up.

If you carry around a modern smartphone (e.g. largish screen) you can buy it as an ebook and load it on there. I carry a 5W solar panel and a 6600mah anker battery, a bit over 8oz total, and that can keep my partners and my phones up for 10 day trips with GPS, photos, and some reference reading.

I have the Lwas Field Guide, Secor, Roper's High Route, and the Eastern Sierra NFS fish lakes PDF available.
