Hwy. 89 (Luther Pass Rd.) to Freel Peak

I'm new to the site and have been lurking about for a few days. I'm looking at a backpacking trip in the next month and have a question about our destination. We're looking at going in on the Tahoe Rim trail at Hwy. 89 to Freel Peak. It appears Hwy. 89 is at 8,000 ft. and Freel Peak is at 10,000. Can anyone tell me how many miles it would be from 89 to Freel and what the elevation is like. I'm hoping we can just hike in and not have to do any rock climbing.

My girlfriend and I climbed Freel from the southwest side a couple of weeks ago.

It sounds like you want to take the FS road to Horse Meadow. There is a trail all the way to the summit of Freel going up Armstrong pass. I think it would be fun to spend the night on the saddle between Freel and Job's Sister.

When I climbed a month ago, we went straight up the south side of the peak from Horse Meadow/Willow Creek. The lower part is quite brushy (Willow Creek is aptly named), and the upper part is steep and sandy, but it's the most direct route up the mountain.

FS051 from 89 to Horse Meadow is decent once you get past the large set of potholes/rocks right at the start.
