Horton Lakes TH (8,200’) to Horton Lakes (9,970’)

After a few hours of sleep, we got up to wait in line for a permit at the Lone Pine Ranger Station. I got #5, and the list on the door said there were 3 permits for South Fork Big Pine left. By the time my number was called, only one was left. We settled for Horton Lakes, but was a little disappointed. We drove to Bishop and stopped at the ranger station to see if maybe someone cancelled. No such luck! So we drove for about an hour to Horton Lakes Trailhead. It was a short hike in, and would have gotten to camp earlier if SnowDude’s camelback didn’t break. The lid floated down the cascades, and we looked for almost an hour hoping it got snagged somewhere. We got to Horton Lakes and found a really nice site, complete with firewood stacked in 3 piles by size. We cleaned up, had dinner by the fire that night, and got to bed early.
