Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Requests Public Assistance in
Search for Missing Hiker

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are asking for assistance
from the
public in obtaining information about a missing hiker. Gregory Raye
of
Campbell, California, was on a solo two-week backcountry hike in
Sequoia
and Kings Canyon National Parks. He was expected to return from his
trip on
August 27, but has not made contact with his family or returned to
his
vehicle as of the writing of this release.

The park received a missing person report from Raye's son around
noon on
August 29. A search was immediately initiated, and still continues,
involving up to 20 ground searchers, three dog teams, mounted
patrol, and
two helicopters. The National Park Service is currently receiving
mutual
aid from YODOGS, Yosemite National Park Search and Rescue, and Inyo
County
Sheriff's Office.

Gregory Raye is described as a 6 foot Caucasian male weighing
approximately 165
lbs. He is 52 years old, with curly grey hair, balding on top, and
blue
eyes with glasses. He was last seen August 15, wearing khaki or
olive-drab
pants, a t-shirt, and hiking boots. He was carrying a very large
internal
frame pack, royal blue in color.

Raye was on a mostly off-trail loop route through the lower part of
Kings
Canyon NP and the upper part of Sequoia NP crossing over the Great
Western
Divide and the Kings-Kern Divide. He was last seen near Sphinx Lakes
heading south on August 15th.

Anyone who may have seen Gregory Raye, or if you have been hiking in
any of
the following areas between August 14 and August 28 is asked to call
the
park dispatch office.
Sphinx Creek
Big Brewer Lake
North Guard
Talus Lake
Colby Lake
Mt. Genevra
Harrison Pass
Vidette Creek
Junction Meadow
Milestone Creek
Lake South America

The parks dispatch office can be reached at 1-559-565-3196, 24 hours
a day.

Media representatives should call 1-559-565-3131 for information.

He was found 2 weeks dead on Mount Brewer. :(

Quoting wmolland from the summitpost California forum at http://www.summitpost.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22026

They found Gregory Raye's body at about the 13,000 foot level on Mt. Brewer yesterday. He apparently fell while attemptiing a difficult route two weeks ago but was not found by later parties due to his location. He was found via helecopter yesterday and they are still trying to recover his body, which is in a steep and narrow chute near the summit that is difficult and dangerous to enter. Over the past 4 days there have been a total of 87 people working on the SAR, including 21 ground units, 6 search dog teams, mounted patrol and 6 helecopters.

Wow, of all places. It's a tragedy but at least he was found. RIP.
