Camping in Yosemite

Post by Trailguru »

Hi there

We are heading to Yosemite next weekend but I just found out that the campgrounds in the Tioga Road were all closed down save for Hodgdon Meadow. Would like to try and stay at either Porcupine Flat or White Wolf. Being that it is after season is it still okay to just camp there and pay the fees? Would the water be turned off and the gates closed??

Has anyone ever done it?

No overnight parking on the Tioga Road until it opens in the spring/summer. Storms next week may close the pass, at least temporarily.

Not sure what you mean by "next weekend", but a winter storm warning is out for this Sunday through early next week.

How about camping on the east side? There are campgrounds near Lee Vining that provide just a short a drive up to Tuolomne Meadows.

Lee Vining Creek has 3 campgrounds along the creek that are quite nice and a short drive to the East gate. Come Nov 1st Lundy Cyn CG w/b the only one open in the area; and at that until the 15th. Tioga Pass may be closed with the impending storm but s/b cleared by next w/e.

Not sure why you are posting on multiple forums when you are going to get the same answer - the campgrounds are closed, gated and off limits for the winter.

You can't go there.

I suggest camping in the valley. Bring your snow cables for the car. The park service will turn you around if it's snowing even slightly, if you don't have them.

As you can see, there is camping on either side of Tioga Rd....and this time of year you'll be able to get a spot I would guess. They are first come first served.

uh. guys? Those campgrounds outside the park may be open---but the real point is that Tioga Road is closed because of the snow. If you want to see certain parts of the park, you'd better be camping on the right side of Tioga Pass.

OP: Hodgdon Meadow is not in Tuolumne Meadows. It's about 45 minutes away. That's the road that is likely to be closed.

We like Hodgdon Meadow, and have camped there often. But if you are most interested in Yosemite Valley (and the road to Toulumne Meadows is likley to be closed) you are about 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley, too.

Uuh.. no, most campgrounds along Tioga close in early October and by the 15th everything is shutdown for camping. Lee Vining along Tioga road is the closest that is available.
