High Sierra Topix

I am hoping to get up to Big Pine Lakes area for some photography in the next week or two. I will be going solo for 2-3 days. I am wondering if anyone has some insight to the area from a photographers perspective. I don't get out to shoot much lately so I looking to maximize my time. Which lakes are best for shots of Temple Crag and areas that might be less crowded. Anything else I shouldn't miss? Also are there many aspen up there and when might they be changing. I am guessing late September???

I read on the Rock Creek site that the temps were dropping below freezing last weekend at the lake and that some of the aspens were already starting to show some cover.

Different area, but not that far away. I just hiked out past Sabrina Lake today (Saturday 9/8/12), and there are aspens along the eastern shore that are starting to turn - that is probably at an elevation of 9,200 feet. Now, back to the area in question. On the hike up North Fork Big Pine Creek, there are some nice stands of aspen, especially in and around Cienaga Mirth, the area known for Lon Chaney Jr.'s cabin. I found good views of Temple Crag from the trail between lakes 2 and 3 during the morning hours, but that was during a July trip.

Herm- Do you think I will have decent light on Temple Crag this time of year? I was wondering about this and you mentioning you were there in July...any guesses on the angle of light and it still illuminating the crag?

riverwalker, I am not sure about the angle nor the illumination, but it is a spectacular canyon that would be well worth a visit. If you dig around in some of the older posts, I bet you could find some pictures of Temple Crag taken at different times of year to determine angles and such.
