High Sierra to Whitney... In March

Post by cjp2b »

Hey guys, so my brother and I hiked from Crescent Meadow to Mt Whitney last summer and were thinking of trying it again but he really thinks it would be fun to go in March. Has anyone ever done this before? Is it even safe? My brother has significantly more winter hiking experience than I but I want any input I can get on the subject.

Thanks!

How deep do you want the snow to be?

i don't like hiking in it when it is over my head.

Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-R ... 0984884963

It wouldn't be a hiking trip - you'd be either snowshoeing or skiing. And March is not the time to do it, since March is usually pretty stormy, and tends to have a lot of snowfall, making for deep soft snow and high avalanche risk.

It depends on what he means by "more winter hiking experience." If he thinks you'll be hiking he has zero experience.

Guides or experienced mountaineer friends are your *safest* bet.
