What Mosquito/Bug Avoidance Techniques For Your Dog?

For those of you who take your dogs with you in June, and July during mosquito season
what precautions do you take to protect you dogs? These blood sucking mini vampires like any
blood not just human blood, and since your dog cannot apply repellant or don netting
themselves its left up to us to protect "man's best friend". How do you ensure they have
no mosquitoes/ticks on them when they come into the tent for the night? Do you have a
inspection routine?

I have none planned. I figure my dogs long hair will provide enough protection. 5 days out around 4th of July will test this theory though. I'm looking forward to any tips in there and will chime back in after my trip.

My vet, a hiker also, recommends topical Advantix as he believes it provides better protection against mosquitoes and ticks compared to other topicals. Seems to work. I also vaccinate my Aussie against Lyme Disease and provide meds for heartworm. Hate to admit it, but my dog is my favorite hiking companion!

What about the face/nose areas where there is little or no hair? Unfortunately they do
not have the ability to convey there discomfort unlike we do.

It's a good question and I don't have an answer. I honestly doubt there is much you can do, but I'd love to see some thoughts here.
DEET or any effective repellent would cause more damage than good when applied, and there's no way that my dog would accept a headnet. I am assuming my dog will get bit up a little bit but I also think she'll still have a great time and would much rather go than stay at home. I won't be more than a long day's hike away from the car at any point so if things go south...

Please don't take this as badgering dog owners. As a former dog owner, and someone
who loves dogs, I just have compassion/concern for them knowing how much we humans
suffer from these blood sucking mosquitoes.
