Mt. Langley via New Army Pass

Hello all,

I am planning a trip to Langley towards the end of this month and was wondering if anyone has hiked around the cottonwood lakes basin recently. Any reports of the snow level or whether the cornice at the top of NAP remains would be extremely helpful. I know its a low snow season but its still the start of the hiking season.

Any information would be awesome.

Horseshoe Meadow Rd. opened yesterday. You will not get any trip reports until after the weekend probably.

As a result of my broken back and other problems (being a city-fied firefighter over a 39 yr period before my many years as a wilderness ranger), it has been awhile since I've posted. I just came online and found this interesting.

I have loved the hike up to Mt. Langley, from any Pass in the Cottonwood Basin (well, maybe not the lower ones), more than any other hike to a peak in the High Sierra. I've been up there at least 5 times, but my memory is "iffy." It is easy-ish and rewarding hike, especially from the "Old" Army Pass.

I am fortunate enough to have my own home built airplane (Vans RV-8A) and am able to make periodic "check out the snow" flights over the Sierra. I was over New Army Pass Tuesday (22 May). There is a cornice across the top but it should melt quickly - 99% of the area is snow free.

I ran across a couple descending Langley on the 21st, who said NAP was quite doable.

Memorial weekend, Hiked from horseshoe up trail pass across to soilder lake and then up to Langley and down via NAP.
The only real snow was the top 20 feet of the NAP and was a little icy but no real problem, it will probably be snow free within the next 10 day's
