Peakfinder - A very cool smartphone app

Post by mschnaidt »

I just found this app for identifying peaks. Thought I'd share...

It has a topographic database that includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North and South Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

It uses the gps in your smartphone to get your location and then enables you to pan and identify the peaks around you. You do not need cell or data service to use it once you have it installed.

It works on Android, IPhone and a couple of Nokia phones. I have an Android phone and it works well so far. Here is a screenshot.

Cost is $3.99. Caution, the database file is 133MB and is a one time download. This is a big file so make sure you have enough memory available and that you are on a 4G or Wifi network.

Enjoy,

Wow! I don't own a cell phone and never will, but even I think that's pretty cool.

After playing with it for a day I like it even more. The app allows you to search peaks by name or by using Google Maps and to view the panorama from that peak. Very slick.
