Going over Lamarck Col. Aug 3

Post by whrdafamI? »

I called the White Mtn. Ranger office on Thursday for a TR. The guy claimed someone went over about 10 days ago and was still reccomending snow shoes. I know we had a "banner" snowfall this year but this sounds hard to believe. So what I need is a recent report from someone who has gone over this year. Preferably in the last few weeks or close to my depart date. If you can help it will be greatly appreciated.

I don't have specific intel, but check out these photos from Mt. Agassiz:

Looks like the area is clearing up nicely. Sure, gullies and colouirs are still going to hold snow from snow time. Also, the snow is likely to be very compacted through multiple freeze-thaws. I'd try to hit Lamarck Col mid morning so that's it has softened up enough to kick sticks but not so soft that you posthole all the way up. I'm going over Piute Pass tomorrow and will be back 10 days so I can give more direct intel on the area then.

I won't be going over before you, but I'm probably going to head over Lamarck after you. I hope you have a good trip too.

Well 11 days left b4 the trip and I am about as ready as I am going to be. In other words not that ready. I have all the food and gear but physically not as ready as I was last year. Don't know what to say about that and its too late to worry about it now. BTW if anyone is in need of new trekking poles check out Sierra Trading Post. Got a new pair of Leki's for only $55 and got free shipping as well. Regular price is $119 at REI.
