Lamark Col. Piute Pass/South lake Cond.

Post by frediver »

Who has been there lately and whats it like?
When will conditions this year resemble early/mid July of Last Year??
In any case I guess I will be safe making plans for mid Aug.

Given the level of the snowpack this year, I don't think it's safe to assume anything. I haven't been up to Lamarck Col this year, but my guess is that snow field is going to stay nice and thick and icy all season long....

Probably still a fine continuous ski run all the way down that valley to Grassy Lake.

OK, I have been looking for the same info. and all I can tell you is to call White Mtn. Ranger office Friday and ask for Doug. 760 873 2500. Supposedly he went up and over this week but won't be back in the office until Friday. I am going over in 1 week and I figure thats our best shot at info. Good luck!

I went over on Aug. 4th. The climb to the Col. is/was harder this year due to all the snow fields prior to getting to it. Sun cups do tire you out. The glacier at the Col. is the biggest I have ever seen it. Getting up it isn't technical. Trekking poles were all we needed. The sign at the top is apparently gone. I don't know if someone took it or the snow pack took it out. The back side is snow free but is still the boulder scramble/hop its always been. Not much fun getting down. All the lakes have a snow field on the north shore that has to be crossed if going down to the JMT. Skeeters weren't bad until we got to Golden Trout Lake. There they took themselves to a whole new level of terror.
