When will Ice House & Union Valley reservoirs open up?

Post by neil d »

I'm putting together a camping trip for June 3-4...first choice is Ice House Reservoir, but will it be open by then? Any locals along the HWY 50 corridor care to wager a guess?

Also, any recommendations on campgrounds would be appreciated...it will be a 'guys weekend' and we'll want to do some fishing along with the general debauchery.

This might help : http://www.sierraoutdoorrecreation.com/ ... ervoir.cfm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

I'll take a guess and say that the developed camping sites around there will be open that week. But that's only a guess as all my camping is primitive camping and I generally bypass the area due to crowds (keep in mind that to me, "crowds" means I can see or hear people). Those reservoirs are around 5k feet and I think they try and open at least a few camp sites as soon as they can. I'm planning on camping as far and high as my Subaru will take me in a few weeks and might end up scouting that area (camp around Loon Lake and see how far snow shoes can get me into Desolation?), if I do, I'll post back with some beta.

Keep an eye on http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/condit ... mp-status/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but you'll probably have to call the forest service because they are really slow to update the site.
