Hello all!
I am happy I found such a great place full of fellow hikers.
I just moved back to California after spending a few years in Idaho for college and want to get into hiking here like I was doing in Idaho.
What is a nice place to start my Sierra adventures? I am going to be in the Truckee area this weekend and would like to go to a nice out of the way lake or river that gets me away from all the crowds. Do you have any suggestions?
Any help or tips would be much appreciated.
Thank you all
Good place to go for someone new to the area

Truckee is a great place to start...and you can get to a lot of good hikes from there. BUt if you really want solitude, you won't find it near any easy lakes---too many other people want the same thing!
But try these hikes:
Five Lake basin...particularly if you go past the first couple of lakes.
Loch LEven Lakes...particularly if you go to the third lake.
You could also hike out of Grouse Ridge and find many nice lakes there...
And for a view, try the hike up Mt. Judah or Castle Peak .
You can read about all of these on our website, if you're interested

What balzaccom said.
If you want something more challenging try a dayhike to Tinker Knob. There is also "summit lake" along the warren lake trail by castle peak which isnt too far, but not very impressive. I like the PCT trailhead by boreal -> warren lake trail -> Frog Lake Cliff. Can be decent solitude there as most people on that trail are backpacking to Warren Lake.
