TR Part 2:Lake Ediza, Garnet Lake, 1000 Is Lake, and High Tr

Postby maverick » Tue Aug 04, 2009 12:13 pm

While descending Volcanic Pass I could see Cabin Lake which is pretty and there
are some small pools on the other side of the rocks at the edge of the bench with
great views down on Shadow Lake.

There is a fishermen trail around the lake with a descent campsite near the western
end of the lake.
It is a long descent down to the Shadow Creek but know I get to see Ediza again
gets me down pretty fast.
Let me say that the scenery around Lake Ediza is drop dead gorgeous, the mountains
the falls, and the flowers all impressed my photographic urges.
On top of that the cloud where building which gave me some extraordinary colors
at the golden hours.

Small creek on the eastern side of Ediza:

Sunrise shots, check out the clouds, wow!

There are some falls above the southwestern end of Ediza which I refer to
as "Twin Falls" which are outstanding.

http://maverick.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p687074564-5.jpg

It was hard to leave Ediza and I almost stayed but I am glad I finally decide
to move on.
I headed up towards Nydiver when the weather started to get threatening
so I hauled past them and down Whitebark Pass and zoomed to the JMT on
Garnet's southern side on the ridge.
As soon as I got to the JMT it opened up with sheet of rain luckily it only lasted
for about 20 min's.

Garnet Lake & Banner Peak during the storm, check out the rain on the lake:

Garnet Lake as the second wave of thunderheads move on in:

On to 1000 Is Lake with ever increasing flowers and clouds.

By early evening the clouds broke and gave me a sunset to remember:

The sunrise was not to bad either:
http://maverick.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p419808432-5.jpg

At 1000 Is Lake after I retired I was awakened by the ever so familiar clanking
of pots, it was around 12 am, and this couple who set up east of me near
the lake, I was in higher up in the trees, got visited every 10-15 min's by a
bear.
This went on for about 2 hours!
I have never witness(by sound) such a persistent bear, I found out the next
morning by another backpacker that there camp was hit, and the bear had
torn and empty backpack apart that evening.
I was off to Agnew Meadow via the High Trail which I was highly anticipating
because of the highly touted wild flower displays that can be seen in good
year.
The wild flowers started getting good around Ediza and were getting better
as I moved north.

Here is a picture of the first cascade of the San Joaquin River which is just
east of 1000 Is Lake(20 min's).
http://maverick.zenfolio.com/img/v5/p205354895-5.jpg

On the High Trail the flowers got better and better until I reached a meadow
that made my jaw drop.
1000's of Lupine in a meadow south of the trail, wow!

Here are a few more flower shot from various places but mostly from the
1000 Is Lakes area and the High Trail:

http://maverick.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p560545697-5.jpg
http://maverick.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p647931301-5.jpg

Near the end of the trail I got a great shot of Shadow Lake & Minarets:
http://maverick.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p337183396-5.jpg

A very productive trip photo wise, but backpacking wise words can not even
come close to describe what comfort and replenishment it did for my soul.

I did not fish, carrying all my camera gear was quite enough.
I saw fish jumping in 1000 Is Lake and Ediza, but Minaret Lake was crazy at
dusk, I counted at least 30 different fish jump out of the water almost
simultaneously, what a glorious site!

Maverick, your pictures are amazing. They are almost more beautiful than the actual places, if that's possible.

I think there are too many professional-level photographers on this board. It makes me embarrassed to post my point-and-shoot pictures of the Kaweah Basin trip I just returned from. ;)

Thanks Q, the full resolution 16x24's are amazing, and will fund future trips.
Of coarse carrying pano gear, 3 lenses, and my camera add weight, but when
I develop and print them it makes all the effort worth while.
Did you make it to Red Spur Lakes Basin?

Unfortunately not. Due to a bizarre blister situation (resulting from a training hike in the same boots I had been wearing comfortably for months) I had to delay the start of my trip, so only had 6 days instead of the 8 I had been hoping for. So I just got to Picket Guard and Kaweah Basins. And, I should add, Duct Tape Basin.

I have really enjoyed reading your posts and gawking at your pics (which I have to put a bib on before viewing). I have been to each of these locations and I experienced masive crowds except for the Cabin and Nydiver areas.

I know who'll win the photo contest this winter if Eric has it again!!!

Thanks,

Flip

Thanks Flip.
No one else at Ashley or Cabin, a group of 3 at Minaret, and I stayed away
from the crowds at Ediza, and 1000 Is lake.

I feel lucky to be a small part of this forum(Topic Novice), but after seeing Maverick's trip report, I am even more inspired to go out and explore this most beautiful place we call The High Sierra! Great report and photos! :partyman:

Thanks STRETCHMAN.
Money from the sales from my photos, which by the way a % goes to the NP's and
NF's in a form of donations, is only a smaller motivating factor to my photography.
The comments like you just made inspire me to do more to introduce the Sierra
to all those who are thinking about exploring, or have backpacked but may need
a little more inspiration to explore even more.
If I can be of any help with my reports, even more so with my photo's, than
I am doing my job, and loving it!
Photo's just have a way of inspiring and allowing the photographer to share with
you that special moment, may it be a sunrise/sunset or a reflection in a lake, they
all are nature's wonderful creations, and my photo's are the instrument that allows
me to share it with you all.
Please, enjoy!

Thanks Maverick,

I appreciate the time, effort, and thought you put into your photos. Even more since I was priviledged watch you in action. This is what you looked like at work earlier this season:
