High Country Sierra Packpack Mid July

Ok, asking for some info. on 2 high country packpacks. I'm concernedthat permits for the John Muir Trail might be hard to obtain so could you offer some suggestions. We will be coming from NM and want the fantastic views, high alpine lakes and not an overabundance of people. I realize that this might be a tall order but any suggestions would help. We have 2 weeks to spend on the trail and would like to divide the time up with 2 treks with a day or two to resupply. You cna reply to me directly, not sure how to get info otherwise at sweeprich@gmail.com. I'm new to the group.

Thanks, Richard

Hi Sweeprich

Welcome.
I have done the JMT twice and got the permits the day of my hike.
They put 40% aside for walk-ins, or next day starts so you should
be able to do you hike.

I have a couple of question before recommending an alternative.
Will you be using 2 cars, or hiking back to the car at the end of your hike?
Are you comfortable with x-country or do you prefer all trail?
How many miles a day can you your group do comfortably?
Without these answers it is kinda difficult to answer your question.

If you want to avoid crowds, avoid the JMT.

Well, a loop is always nice or if that is not possible and we can pay someone to shuttle that would be fine. The hike will only be my wife and myself. We are probably good for 6 or so hours depending on elevation and maybe take 1 layover day. Thanks
