a trip around DV and southern Sierras

Post by Quandary »

Recently did a 9-day loop around DV, including a few days in the Sierras near Big Pine (April 2 - 11). Pics can be found at http://quandary98.smugmug.com/

I flew in to Vegas, rented a car and got out of there ASAP. Original plan was to drive to DV directly and camp, but it was too late and I ended up crashing at a motel in Beatty. The next day I drove to the Racetrack and hiked up Ubehebe Peak. Highlights of the rest of the trip:
*Eureka Dunes - hike to the southern end of the dunes
*Mt. Alice, near Big Pine. On the trail here I ran into the fabulous Ms. MooseTracks and she gave me useful tips on the route to the summit of Alice.
*A visit to the the famous and not-so-secret site where the photos related to the U2 Joshua Tree album were taken
*A hike to the Panamint Dunes
*A hike to the narrows of Fall Canyon, and afterwards a hike to the summit of Lake Hill in Panamint Valley
*You have to admit... this (http://quandary98.smugmug.com/gallery/4 ... 74WN6-A-LB)is a cool picture, my Sierra Nevada with the neon sign in the background, and I didn't discover this until I got home! Sure didn't do it on purpose.

Lowlights:
*Somehow got off the route going up Last Chance Mountain and decided to give it up.
*Smartly deciding it would be a good idea to start hiking up Black Mtn. at 2 p.m. and, midway through, finally figuring out that if I continued I wouldn't get back to the car until, what ,11 p.m.? Gave that one up too.

More details with the pics...
