Thanks Markskor, but
this dharter is from central PA and instead of a southern drawl says; maus, haus, and get ot vonct!! That's PA dutch for mouse, house and you gotta be kidding! Anyway, we opted to skip the overnight at Tuolumne - didn't want to travel 3000 miles and risk months of planning. Since that's only day 3, we'll pick up our resupply, catch a couple of meals and a shower, and head on down the trail.
Cherron,
Just sent our resupply off to MTR. We fly into Sacramento on the 21st and hit the trail from Happy Isles on the 22nd. Will be at Red's on the 28th, VVR on the 31st, MTR on 9/2 and Whitney on the 12th.
We'll keep a look out for you!

dharter,
We should pass each other between MTR and Mather Pass. There are 3 of us.
Have an incredible journey!

Quoting the Inyo NF web site, the rule is "If you exit the wilderness for more than 24 hours or if you exit and then re-enter the wilderness at a different trailhead it is considered a separate trip and a new permit would be required." So it would be OK to spend the night outside the wilderness as long as you go wilderness boundary to boundary in less than 24 hours, and you don't exit one trailhead and enter a different one - nothing there about "overnight". See http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation ... owto.shtml
