Yosemite open?

Post by markskor »

Yosemite National Park will not require day-use reservations to enter the popular park in March.
“Starting March 1, reservations will not be required to enter Yosemite.''

Get ready for long entrance gate lines, no parking spaces and trashed resources.

I am not sure the hordes will be horrible. At least, during our visits to other parks in the Southwest this spring, people seemed to be on pretty good behavior--not like the early days of the pandemic, when they acted out. And I, for one, am grateful that I can now choose to drive into Yosemite on the spur of the moment from our cabin near Sonora, without needed a day-use reservation, do a day-hike, and drive home again.

BTW, no mention of this on the official Yosemite website as of 7 a.m. today. It still says that you need a reservation for day use.

Last sentence in the paragraph with header “Entrance Reservations” reads
Starting March 1, reservations will not be required to enter Yosemite.”

I used to be on an e-mail list from YNP that provided early notice re road and campground openings and closings. as somebody who prefers early or late season travel, I found it very useful, particularly in dry years. I stopped getting them in the last year or two. did it die of covid? if it still exists, anybody have a website where I can sign up again? thanks in advance.

I just called the wilderness office and they still are undecided if they will have true "walk-in" permits; said it depends on when their staff get vaccinated. They expect to have a public statement in a few weeks. Also said that the rules will apply equally to all places you could get a permit, including picking up a permit from the Hetch Hetchy entrance kiosk. Supposedly no more "self-registration" off-season (used to be before May 15). I sure would like to see this all in writing on their website. I am suspect of phone call information. Has anyone heard differently?
