By the way, if one follows Crabtree Creek down to the PCT (where it joins Whitney Creek), and then continues downstream another mile, one encounters a "packers camp" where the cut logs serve as tables, benches, seats,..

How difficult would it be to follow Whitney Creek all the way to the Kern, as opposed to taking the trail to Wallace Creek and then down to Junction Meadow? It sounds like the camp you are describing is halfway between the PCT and the HST/Kern?
I don't know how I stumbled on this thread (http://www.whitneyzone.com/wz/ubbthread ... r_Shortcut) here is where I heard about the packer camp and a route up from the Kern
It's worth reading Steve C's original thread, in which he also describes descending Big Arroyo all the way to the Kern http://www.whitneyzone.com/wz/ubbthread ... ney_Portal, to get an idea of his skill level. I came across his thread because I was planning on doing the "hump route" he describes from Big Arroyo to Rattlesnake Creek this summer, wasn't able to make it, and now regret it because it burned a few weeks later. It's also worth reading the comments in the thread above from someone who tried to descend from the packer's camp by following his route in reverse.
