I finally managed to get this one done. It’s the usual format for my trip reports. During this quieter time of the year, I hope it's a pleasant diversion for anyone who cares to read it.

You are a gifted writer and photographer. Two times I have had to cancel trips to Pioneer Basin. It just moved back to the top of my list.

I agree with David; nice photos! Love what you said about Thoreau- he's a timeless inspiration.
I do believe that pika's mom and dad were belding ground squirrels

Laurence, a beautiful trip report and your photos are gorgeous.

I hiked in this area in August this summer, going over Mono Pass and then up to Grannell Lake the first few days of my trip. There was still a lot of snow on the pass, but not nearly as much as you experienced.

One note regarding your trip report: I don't think Picket Guard Lake and environs are visible from Pioneer Basin, even as expansive as that view is.

Thanks everyone for all for the compliments. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Mike, regarding Picket Creek Lake, the reference is to the views in the entire Sierra with Picket Creek Lake as an example.

Harlen, for me any cute little rodent at that altitude looks like a pika. Why worry about facts? It may have been the Russians and not the Ukrainians, and even if it’s really a Beldings ground squirrel, it’s a pika to me, regardless of parentage.

The correction has been made on the photo caption and trip report. Thanks for your sharp eyes. The ears are the giveaway when one sees photos.
