Very sad for the loss of Alan's life. It is a sinking feeling to learn of his death. He was a fellow adventurer drawn to the same places we all are on HST. We go there for many reasons, the beauty, the heeling, the elation, our health, the thrill.... In our pursuits, we all take risks travelling in the mountains. Alan, I am sure, like most of us enjoy the process of taking calculated risks and managing those risks, but his death is a reminder that we are all mortal and that the risks are real.

I didn't know Alan, but I think I understand what he was seeking on his adventures
I guess we can take solace in bmac96's point, "He died doing what he loved most in the place he loved the most.."

So very sorry to hear the news. I agree with others previous statements that words are so inadequate. I do hope those left behind can find some peace in knowing he was able to experience a beautiful place when he passed, and comfort in knowing a community he was a part of, cares for you and him, even if we don't know one another in person.

Well this is terrible news, I am so sorry.

Can I suggest that the best we as a group can extract from this is to share relevant information about this death, the incident at Red Slate, and general relative similar information so that we can all advise others and also adopt for ourselves the safest practices?

So very sad. Condolences to family and friends.

We now have lost two HST members in late fall trips. Not having details, one cannot be certain how much late season cold, blue-ice and short days contributed to the tragedies, as well as the unfortunate outcome of the Red Slate climb of non-HST members. Just my unscientific observation that late fall trips add another layer of risk.

I have chosen to not go on snow on my last 2 trips, I believe in is scary dangerous at this point. 1st trip I would have gone up to point john/Thompson area and just got back from doing mt marsh wanted Mcadie also but didnt want to come down arc pass with the snow.
