Valentine Lake photos: http://community.webshots.com/album/513233017tMAuEP

Hiked to Valentine Lake in the John Muir Wilderness, where SnowDude proposed 3 years ago on Thanksgiving Day. Trip was 12 miles with 1,900' el gain. So cold my camelback hose froze 4 times in between drinks

Valentine Lake is one of my favorite short trips out of Mammoth. What a romantic spot for a proposal. Give SnowDude the 2 thumbs up for me!

What's the sad story, Snowy? I couldn't quite make out the names on the cross on the tree, so I couldn't Google it as you did.

"In early September/The restless winds sent/Snow that covered/Our noble young men's tent/And laid them to sleep/In eternal rest/Now they're part of this mountain/That will every be blest."

I'll never forget finding this plaque bolted to a rock on the north shore of Thousand Island Lake (in, oh, probably 1972 or so). [Unfortunately, I *have* forgotten the names of the two "noble young men," although I think one them was named "Ghee."]

These are certainly sad kinds of stories, as is the story of Walter A. Starr, Jr., but they're part of what makes the Sierras alive, at least for me.

The sign says Adam Bacon . . . LMU Lions

We had not seen it before, so we looked it up.

Two student athletes Jessica Hanson (women's soccer) and Adam Bacon (men's cross country) killed in a car accident while on vacation with the Hanson family. Hanson's dad and her sisters boyfriend also died. Her mom and sister were injured.

Snow Nymph - What a great place for the two of you to revisit. I tried to do that hike last winter, toooo much snow. I ended going to Laurel Lakes which turned into a really fun snow shoe trip.
“Are you skiing next week”, I’ll be in Mammoth Weds thru Sunday next week, staying at Davdison St. and plan to ski 3 days.

I haven't been to Laurel Lakes yet. I've only seen it from the summit of Bloody Mountain. We drove past the second switchback and parked (snow blocked the road).

We'll be in Mammoth every weekend til the end of the year. Sounds like Mammoth got enough coverage so I won't have to worry about damaging my board again. Damage was $60 to fix my board from opening weekend, and $30 for SnowDude's one run. I will have my cell phone on. I think you have the number, if not I'll send it thru e-mail. Or stop by Saturday for a drink. Not sure where we're eating, but we'll be going out somewhere.
