So from what I am understanding, I should expect to find no viable routes to the Painted Rock area this early in the season? Would everyone agree that both Crown Creek and the Middle Fork are mostly likely deemed uncrossable at this point, leaving the area south of the Middle Fork (George of Despair & Painted Rock) inaccessible?

This is why most people don't go in spring....

George probably despairs because of this. :p

When I went in there 45 yrs ago in late June after descending Goddard Ck., there was one rattlesnake on the valley floor every 1/4 mi. from Simpson Mdw to TV; it was pretty unnerving. My buddy stayed up all night with his flashlight on convinced they would be coming after us. Low elevation remote valleys = lots of snakes. The second time I went in Aug. and didn't see a one.

I went down Goddard Creek in '89. It sucked out loud.

Yes, lower Goddard Creek is a curse to be avoided at all costs. No sense in experiencing the ultimate backpacking hell.

Sending some your way as there's going to be a big heat wave this weekend. It should be nice and toasty in the gorge. When you return, please share with us your trip report and pictures! :)

The trail to Tehipite is easily missed. It is right where you pass the Johnson Cow camp where it says "no camping". You will be able to see a tree that has fallen over about 5' off the ground and across the trail.

All the trails are easily missed, apparently. Crown Valley gets a lot of traffic from people who miss turnoffs, or so the folks who have the cabins say. They bribed some lost adults out of trying to take their scouts down to Tehipite... we'll help you get back to the car, not take these kids any further, because if you can't get there in two days of wandering, you should quit trying.

(Crown Valley is less than a day of hiking from the trailhead.)

All helpful advice, thanks everyone! I’ll share trip details when we return. If I don’t return by Monday... wait longer ;)
