Cattle have there place, but, our tax dollars helped restore a meadow where a creek flowed thru that a neighbors cattle had utilized for years. Seems it cost over a million building many ponds and restoring the channel. Shaping up more every year.

I'd venture to guess that there is no NEW cattle grazing in the parks and wilderness areas but the government still allows older ranches/stock owners to graze...grandfather clauses? I've seen cattle and sheep (far greater damage) as high as 10,000 feet. Makes you scratch your head and wonder why a hiker is saddled with regulations such as trail quotas, wilderness permits, fire permits, fire restrictions, campsite restrictions, (even in established campsites), food storage restrictions, etc... and at the same time there are sheep turds swirling in the ceeks of the headwaters.

I kind of figured that was where you encountered the cow/cattle.

There is a grazing allotment that borders the park in the Redwood Canyon area. the problem is that the park/forest boundary is not entirely fenced and cattle find there way into the park.

this has been a long time ongoing issue in this area.

Sometimes a stray or two is not rounded up in the Fall when the permittee brings the herd down for the Winter. These strays just wander around until predators get them, the Winter gets them, or they are rounded up the following Fall.

The Forest Service tried to round up a small herd of cattle from the Ishi Wilderness a few years ago. They had been there so long (several generations) they were feral and now extremely wily and clever. Some amusing stories of the great Ishi roundup fiasco are still told on Lassen NF. A few were caught and removed, but many remained. Basically, the cattle won.
