North Lake to Florence Lake

Post by jorrflv »

We are leaving in about a week. I have a couple of 7 day routes posted here.

Plan A
https://www.gaiagps.com/public/e60IHcLtA45tlPRFWnXagXlg

Plan B
https://www.gaiagps.com/datasummary/fol ... RasterFeet

Any thoughts on either of them?

Also we keep the milage fairly low on each day so we could do some "side" routes. Any suggestions on must sees in the the vicinity of the routs?

Thanks,

Jon

Also any trail reports on Lamark Col or Hell for Sure Pass? I searched the forums and haven't seen any come in.

Jon,
Last I checked, they have not opened the North Lake road, but it was nearly fixed when we walked out on June 30, so I'm not sure what's up. For photos and a description of the area you're heading, see my July 2 post. There will still be LOTS of snow once you get over Piute (or Lamarck; if you choose Lamarck, it won't be easy, but there were already dry spots around the upper Lake when we went by on the 30th; by comparison, Darwin Canyon was relatively snow-free). And, should you be aiming to cross creeks at Hutchinson Meadow, be prepared for a doozie or two (or, to turn back). Runoff should still be thunderous. Cameron

Adventure A. A lot of travel over blinding bright white sun cupped unpleasant snow fields with boring frozen lakes. No way you will cross the San Joaquin River at 8k without swimming. Adventure B avoids that. Not a wise itinerary this 2017 year mid July but fine after mid August. As for Humphreys Basin per recent reports there is still a huge amount of melting snow in that high basin that by mid month may be at peak melt. The ability to cross French Canyon Creek at Hutchinson without considerable danger now that snow bridges are likely all melted out is likely questionable unless someone reports otherwise.
