Car Camping Eastern Sierras This Weekend

Post by Tonydavid »

Hi You all have been so helpful. Question….where is a great place to car camp in Eastern Sierras….this weekend! Can leave from LA early Friday or Saturday. Yes, I know that lots of campgrounds booked, its last minute and first come first served is tricky at peak season! We would like a beautiful and access to some good hiking trails for my 13 year old son and I. We are tent camping and have Subaru Outback. Hoping for a little peace and quiet too.We hope to acclimate to the altitude while camping/hiking. On Tuesday, we will start backpacking trip in from Agnew Meadows to Lake Ediza and Thousand Island Lakes. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and tips.

Shady Rest Campground in Mammoth is pretty good, you can do several hikes in the area including goes see Mono Lake, best to visit at sunrise or sunset.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Thank you for the Shady Rest suggestion - looks convenient! I was hoping to find a campsite by a lake, steam or with a view. Any recommendations?

Here are our TRIP REPORTS/PHOTO ESSAYS- see links...We took a fantastic father/son 6 day backpack from Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows July 19-25, 2006. We also car camped before and after the trip at Pumice Campground on the Red's Meadow Road. We had a lot of fun making them. We hope you will read them and check out the photos. We want to THANK all the people on the highsierratopix that helped us SO much by answering questions, providing great advice and sharing your experience. You guys are FANTASTIC! We hope that these trip reports will inspire and help someone else to experience the wilderness.
