SEKI Food storage regulations:

Containers are required in the Dusy Basin, Rae Lakes Loop, North Dome and Rock Creek areas from May 1 through October 31.

In areas where food storage containers are not required you may use a food storage box if available. Keep in mind that you must share these boxes with other hikers; locks are not permitted on them. Carry rope for hanging food in case the box is full or you don't camp where you intended. The caching of food and gear in food storage boxes is not permitted within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Attention: Food storage containers are required at Kearsarge Lakes. No food storage boxes are available there.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Under "JMT Resupply Option [sic]" add the official U.S. Post Offices at Tuolumne Meadows and at Mono Hot Springs. Both of these will hold a mailed resupply package for free. You can also drop off a resupply at a post office but you may be charged for that.

It sure would be nice if non pack service people could commercially carry food over the passes.

The newer Tom Harrison maps have bear boxes marked on them, too. Nice for field use / change of plans.

An important note on bear boxes: do not, do not, do not store a cache in bear boxes in Sequoia Kings. It will be removed! Every year, I'd remove hundreds of pounds of food from the Kearsarge/Charlotte/Vidette boxes. I'd leave a note but rarely would the person show up. Many would leave a note saying "free food" but it would stay and rot. A major pain and the reason the boxes in Kearsarge Basin were locked up (removed?? I've been gone for a few years).

I'm not sure of the ones at, say, Onion Valley (USFS) but I think they were going to start confiscating there as well. Again, only about 20% of people who leave caches pick them up leaving it for others to clean up after them.

(Sorry to be on the edge of grumpy but, boy, were caches a pain...).

thanks,

George

Was at Onion Valley last summer and a ranger was removing food dated as long term storage (more than three weeks in the future). It is NOT meant as a food cache for JMTers or PCTers.
