Early Season Warning

Postby maverick » Fri May 13, 2016 1:37 pm

Early season is here and with all of the beauty it brings us, it also has dangers lurking, especially the number two killer of hikers/backpackers, drowning. Creek crossing can be very deceptive, even hikers with a lot of experience can get into trouble very quickly.

For those of you new to the Sierra, please read the following thread on how to cross creeks/rivers safely, and those of you who are experienced, please take your time re-reading this thread to brush up on some of the techniques and dangers involved with crossings. Don't become a statistic!

Here is a video from Yosemite NPS about the dangers of creek crossings:

Yosemite NPS:
Rivers and creeks are running high, and they are beautiful... but deadly. Please be sure to keep back from swiftly flowing water. Be aware that wet rock can be surprisingly slick. Most people who end up rescued or recovered from the river didn't intend to go in.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
