Thanks everybody for the replies! I hadn't even noticed the possibility of following the stream down from Lonely Lake until it meets with the Elizabeth Pass trail, that's a good backup plan.

We've decided to replace this trip with a shorter one out to the San Gorgonio Wilderness. I don't want to take a new hiker out into any snow conditions that involve more than a few patches here and there. But I'm going to try to get at least a few of us to try this route later in the season, maybe sometime in August.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
