Hi,

We are planning Thousand Island lakes hike in September 10-11-12.
Plan is

1. High Trail to Thousand Island lake on 9/10
2. TI lake to Garnet lake to Ediza lake Via JMT and Shadow Creek Trail
3. Ediza late to Agnew Meadows via Shadow Creek Trail

I would like to know which permits do I need.

As far as I can tell,
if I get "overnight" permits for High Trail, JMT, and Shadow Creek Trail all beginning 9/10 that should be fine.

Or do I need
1. Overnight permit for High Trail on 9/10
2. Overnight for JMP and Shadow creek on 9/11 ?

Please advice.

Thousand Island and back?
You will need just the one Wilderness Permit, (obtained in person at the Permit Office in Mammoth Lakes) - stating the following -
The number of hikers in your party -
The exact date you will be starting on - (You must start out on this date!)
The name of the trailhead (TH) you will be starting at - (You must start at this TH.)
The approximate number of days you will be on the trail.

Permit in hand, once you start out hiking on the exact date, at the named TH, where you go from there is up to you. Even though the Ranger will usually ask you the rest of the planned itinerary, (exit plans), these plans often can change when on the trail...(mine usually do.) Thankfully. Rangers know this too and are generally sympathetic to all possible trail whimsy.

As with all/(most?) Wilderness Permits, once you are legal at the start (exact date and exact TH), you can go anywhere - return by whatever trail route you choose. (However, if you were going over Donahue Pass to Tuolumne Meadows, due to the new JMT quota rules started this year, a JMT "pass-through the pass" permit will also be required. (???) As you are not doing TM - moot. BTW, In years past, you could have not returned back to Agnew after 1000 Isl and exited Tuolumne instead - on the same valid permit...no more.)
OH, you also will be required to carry a bear can too.

Are the shuttle bus regulations still in effect at that time? I am always very confused about those regulations.

DP shuttle will stop running on the 9/7, so the OP will have to drive down to Agnew Meadow.

I would try to nail that permit ASAP...it's a crowded area, with lowish quotas

pleaning on doing the trail, one day, way and back from silver lake.

few questions in which i will be very happy for assistance:
1. are there any markings on the trail?
2. do i need a permit (dont camp at the lake)?
3. is the trail clear or navigation is needed?
4. in case navigation is needed - which map, and where can i percuhes it?

The trail from Silver Lake to Thousand Island Lake is closed. According to the following, it will be closed all summer.

Welcome to HST!
Most important information needed is, when are you planning to do this hike? There is still a lot of snow on the trails and dangerous creek crossings. Also, please read this: http://www.highsierratopix.com/communit ... 18#p121256
The trail is marked, no navigation needed, no permit needed for a day hike. Getting the Tom Harrison Maps "Mammoth High Country Trail Map" would still be a good idea to have.
If you are planning this trip in August or after, then consider driving down to Agnew Meadow and start your hike from there.
