Taking a dog to Golden Trout lakes (Onion Valley)

I canceled my North Lake trip, so I was thinking of a short hike with the wife and dog over Labor Day weekend. Golden trout lake is a possible permit, and seems to have some solitude. I know the trail is rough, but could my Queensland healer get over the rock slide area relatively easily?

Was just up there the other weekend. We hiked over the rock slide area on the way up only to realize we didn't have to. As your hiking up, a trail cuts to the right in to the shrubs and crosses the creek just before the rock slide. A little hard to notice on the way up if your not looking for it. It was pretty apparent on the way down. I'd say you'd be fine if you take that route. Otherwise you'd likely have to pick up and help your dog over some sections of the rocks.

Also, I posted some pics of this section on a trip report a few days ago.

This pic was taken from the trail we should have taken looking out onto the rocks that we climbed over.

I know the fishing is marginal, any nice campsites you saw while there?

Sorry..wasn't really looking around with camping in mind since we were just day hiking. Also, we only went to the first of the the two lakes up the right side and had it to ourselves. For what is worth, we were up there on a Saturday. A guy we ran into mentioned that there was only one tent set up at the second lake..not sure about the lake up to the left.

Another thing, the lake we were at was probably about 5 feet low based on water marks. We were told the upper lake was normal.

Sorry for the delay, yes Onion valley is the trail head out of independence. My dog is sort of a mutt since we rescued her. we were told she is a stumpy tailed Queensland healer. she has some mottling like a Queensland, but is mainly black, so she only looks like a Healer as far as body not coloring. She gets to go on all day hikes and trips with the wife, but other wise, the wife wants her home.
