Hester Lake via Le Conte Canyon

Does anyone have information on the route to Hester Lake via Le Conte Canyon? Most sources rate it Class 3, due to a steep headwall of about 300-400ft. I'm looking for an account from anyone who has done this route. Does it require rope?
