A weekend hike to Susie (Desolation Wilderness)

Last Friday we headed out of Glen Alpine Springs to spend the night at Susie. I wonder how (Madame Helena) Modjeska Falls will look next September.

The creek crossing at mile 3.3 has less snow than two weeks ago when we crossed the stream.

Check out that beast of a pack she is carrying!

We set up camp right next to the falls at the outlet of Susie.

I walked a bit downstream to check out the waterfall above Grass Lake.

When I got back to camp I noticed that my new friend “Hantavirus Harry” invited himself to lunch on my stuff. He forced me to hang the food.

The lake is completely ice free. This is looking south with Cracked Crag in the background.

I saw another wildlife named “Bernadine Beaver” happily swimming in the water.

The big shock and surprise was all of the other campers that joined us at Susie. We counted 16 other hikers! This count did not include us. The other question we get asked is about the local Dracula population. The vampires are still germinating. I think it is still a little too cold for those evil monsters, I mean lovely God’s creatures.

Saturday morning we left the lake to bag Jacks Peak.

Very cool. “Hantavirus Harry” made me laugh. Looks like a nice trip, thanks for the report.

 Ditto. Although, for me they'll always be "Hipbelt Harry." Yes, I now have a modified hipbelt  .

Thanks again for the report.

Here's a reverse shot for you. From Cracked Crag towards Susie (June 2013):

Pretty pics, Russ, but such sad water levels. I'm worried that fire and smoke are going to be critically dangerous by late summer. Thanks.

I enjoyed reading your post about your hike in Desolation. That is one of my favorite areas for hiking. Your names for the critters are so fitting!
