Thanksgiving Weekend Death Valley trip

Tomcat, after hearing you and TT talk about different ways to go, what is the fastest way there? We will meet you guys Sat morning, what time? Trail bud will have a four wheel drive Toureg VW. Neither one of us has ever been there before.

most direct for me is via Hunter Mountain - as long as the spring has not turned the road into soup city - the road from ubehebe crater is long and rutty - after already making a long drive to get to ubehebe crater - 3rd option is up lippincott mine road - that is not the quickest way - I am thinking of going down that way just for the view. you should come and join - if you need I will send you a map with routes on it via e-mail

We got home a little while ago after about 10 hours on the road (including stops and traffic delays...)

This is a great group of people to be stuck with in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for the good time.

And TT, awesome choice with the Corridor - what a great canyon!

I only have ~600 photos to go through, so I might have them done in time for next Thanksgiving.

glad you guys made it home ok - was nice to meet everyone. we did ubehebe peak today - was home by 5:30. next comes photo editing

I'm home - it was a great weekend - thanks for posting the trip Sooz - it was nice not being out there alone for a change. I took a shower in Furnace Creek after Ubehebe and then had dinner in Shoshone. When I got to Baker the 15 wasn't moving so, I headed into the Mojave Preserve to watch a movie and take a nap. It was clear sailing at 1 am - only 2 hours from Baker to Redlands.

We were so close but so far away.

Doug, Ryan and I drove up Sat morning early, took the 190 from Olancha to the saline vly rd and then the Lippincot mine rd. Thought we were going to get there earlier. Ended up doing Little Ubehebe with Dougs son making his first summit.

Then went to the gps and could not get the garmin 60csx to change from utm into those god awful coordinates sooz left. Drove around for awhile, went to Teakettle junction to see if anyone left a change of site note, and ended up driving out in the dark coming out at Scottys Castle.

It was a fun day doing the four wheel drive road in, and seeing Ryan doing his first summit was priceless, hope to make the next one whith you guys!

Sorry about the coordinates- got 'em from a friend and the friend is reliable, so...
There were word directions, no? And Kathy posted a map on this thread.
Tom told us you guys would meet us at the Ubehebe Lead Mine Saturday morning if ya couldn't find us. We were at the correct spot for camp and there was no need to change the camp site, hence no note at Teakettle. I thought about you guys alot, kept hoping you'd drive by and see us.
But glad you had fun and glad Ryan bagged a peak. Cool. I went out Lippencott yesterday, was not as bad as I had imagined, but took more time than going any other way. Fun stuff.
Again, I'm sorry about the coordinates- guess Tom is right, I need to switch to UTM's like everybody else....

We should have been able to change the coordinates on the gps or figured out the utm prior to leaving, but not being desert dwellers we thought it would be easy. The verbal instructions make sense now, after being all over the place. The coronas were cold, logs ready to burn, food for a month and no place to party! next time.

Next time for sure!
It was a great group and the Corridor was better than I had imagined it to be. Now that we are all fossil experts I am expecting big things in the future! Dinosaur bones, perhaps?? (I'd settle for a fish fossil or a complete set of the state rocks!!)
Sounds like everybody got home okay with some delays. The traffic was pretty much a mess no matter where you were coming from or headed to, it sounds like. EXCEPT for Tom who lives to darn close to EVERYTHING!
