We'll it is the end of 2014 hiking season so it is time to start with my 2013 trip reports. During the previous fall, before we knew that there was going to be another year of abysmal snowfall I decided it was time for Kathy to see Waterwheel Falls. I put in for the lottery for the first weekend the HSC would be open. And we got it. Actually there weren't very many people who put in for the lottery as later in the spring my cousin Gary was able to get in for the same weekend?
This trip was to be first of my annual Sierra marathon of trips so the logistics were somewhat complicated. Drive 2 vehicles down to Mammoth, and leave the 4 runner with markskor. Spend the night in Mammoth with a superb dinner at convict lake with Mark and Kathy, then drive to TM for 2 more nights of acclimation for Kathy. Cousin Gary showed up the second night. The next morning we took the shuttle to the w. end of the meadow to take the "fisherman" trail down to meet the trail at the bridge that crosses the Tuolumne. After spending the night at the HSC we headed down to Waterwheel falls. Due to the lack of winter snowfall, the falls were not up to their full potential. Bored with the slow pace of his much older cousin, Gary took off the next AM. I spent the day fly fishing which caused tendinitis to flare up in my right shoulder (which has plagued me off and on ever since--getting old is a b-tch but beats the alternative). That night we gave Gary's dinner away to a thru hiker, trail name Prophet. We would meet up with him 2 more times that summer. He would spend two nights with us in Bend when he passed through on the PCT and we would spend a night with him in Vermont during our late summer early fall cross country road trip.
The highlights of the trip were the after dinner sunsets viewed looking down the Tuolumne River toward Wildcat Point. Our return hike out was cold an drizzely. The we missed the shuttle and had to wait a half hour in the rain for the next one. The next day was about the same so we headed down to mono lake and did touristy things before heading up to TPR for dinner and Pie a la mode.
The following morning markskor showed up in the 4 Runner, Kathy headed home and markskor and I headed off for the Annual Old Fart gathering.
