TH at Jennie Lakes Wilderness? Big Meadow...

Post by evilgenius32 »

Yes, first major turn after you cross the creek. Perfectly fine for passenger cars and there is an actual trail that meets up with the Big Meadows trail. And the road is open all the way to Marvin Pass, so all turn offs through are open.

Thanks for the update, evilgenius32. We were on the trail by then, though. We did go ahead and use the Big Meadow TH because we (and we use this a lot) figured we needed the exercise. But yes, the Fox Meadow road was said to be very okay for small cars (by some we met out on the trails - who said the few potential "wash out" places were not at all bad). And yes, from Fox Meadow TH to our trail where we were already in progress was not x-country at all. Big old trail... I'm guessing the additional mileage to use Big Meadow was about 1.25 each way.

As for the bear boxes at any of the THs in the area... There are none. A trail type crew we ran into at Weaver Lk did say something about the lack of bear boxes at THs in the Sequoia National Forest having something to do with them wanting to keep it wild. ?? Big Meadow TH has a trash bin, recycle bins, a huge pit toilet? Wild? But the young crew was cleaning up from the lesser humans who had been at Weaver, so... whatever they say.

Having an extra old Garcia bear cache, we easily made use of it and stashed any and all possible bear attractants in a fine hiding spot. We also tried for the first time the "dryer anti cling cloths" method to discourage rodents from nibbling (or nesting in) the car, and the box of the leftovers absolutely had to be kept in a bag and hidden with the Garcia. (With, not in!) Way way stinky those things, but I'm happy to report that the leftovers, as well as the four wrapped around rocks and sitting on top of the tires along with the four the tires were on top of, were all still there and not messed with at all. (Effective? Hard to prove a negative, but there were no apparent rodent effects visited upon the car. True test might be to use them at the TH at Edison Lk - Mouse Central.)

Did get to Weaver, Seville, one of the Sheep Camp Lks, Lost, Ranger, Beville, two lakes before Crescent and Crescent... Twin Lakes, Jennie... Lots-o-beauty! Hopefully a TR in not too long.
