I normally wouldn't post a dayhike on here, but I figured that it could be useful for those tracking conditions. I'll have another one of these in a day or two.

Schmals, love the photos. I did a 4 nighter here last year. Great pics. I am interested about your dog's sleeping quarters at night. I just got a Giant Schnauzer puppy (5 month old/ 50lbs already) and I will be training him to eventually come with me on some of my backpacking trips.

What does he lay on/ sleep in when hitting the sack? Any feedback will help me with my final decisions.

Thanks.

My dog is pretty low maintanence. So far, her sleeping setup is just a blue foam pad that I have cut down to size. I take a 2 person tent (big agnes fly creek 2) and she squeezes in with me. She is crate trained so the tent is a big source of comfort for her.

I like cowboy camping though, so starting this summer when the weather is warm I'm going to start doing that with her and we'll see how that goes. I'll also make sure she is leashed to something if she is sleeping out of the tent.

Hi Schmalz,
Great trip report and just beautiful pictures!! Thanks so much for taking the time to share. My wife has finally decided she wants to go backpacking; although she has gone car camping and hiking quite a bit, this would be her first real backpack trip. I was originally thinking of the Saddlebag Lake area, but this spot really looks perfect for her first trip. Do you happen to have any comments or suggestions as to the best time to visit Little Lakes Valley for a 2 night trip (given the dry conditions we are facing this year and/or any other factors I might not be thinking about)? We are free to go anytime between July 15 and September 15. Thanks again!

Mid July is perfect.

Great pictures Shmalz, as always! My sweethearts first hike in the sierra was to Ruby Lake. What a great trail head there with perfect peaks.

I agree with Sparky. Mid July will be perfect this year as long as we don't have any big wildfires by then. If you can pull off a trip mid-week, you'll enjoy a lot more solitude as well.

I took my sweetheart up to Ruby on Sunday. I'm trying to post a report from the Cold Creek Inn in Mt. Shasta but the connection is no good! :(
