I take it you're trying to avoid a westside entry, but if not, for the short hop from Bakersfield, you could certainly get up to Moose Lake by following the Alta trail out of Wolverton (and, it's no problem to camp in the wind up there). Yes, it would be a moderately long day to get there, but if the snow is too much, there are little tarns below Moose that are very cute. Also, there are lots of options out of Mineral King, as long as you marmot-proof your vehicle. Lots less time driving, lots more time on trail!
