I wonder how much it snowed in the Whites on Friday night? - it was raining hard in the evening on Friday when I was driving on Highway 6. That should be a great climb if you can get to the trailhead.

hopefully not too much. From our hike Saturday morning we could see that Olancha got a lot of snow from Friday's storm, but most of it was gone by the afternoon.

The snow on Whitney doesn't look too bad, so I'm hoping its about the same on Boundary. We'll go as far as we can. CLMRG will be there, so we'll have good tracks to follow!

Horseshoe Mdw road is closed now. Not sure how long Onion Valley Road will be open. I will be off-line until late Wed, so I won't know what conditions are for that weekend.

So how about a trip to Death Valley? I heard the weather has cooled down. We could meet at Emmigrant Campground (free camping), then do day trips in the area.

If the majority wants to do the Sierra, someone will have to keep tabs on the weather and road closures.

I have not done a whole lot of DV exploring other then Car Camp trips to Saline and Eureka Valley with side canyon hikes. Lots of way cool prehistoric and historic stuff.

I'll be heading over to the east side from the west probably 178, Walker Pass.

I'll go where ever the majority chooses.

I will be leaving tonight, and won't be back til late Wed. Trekker and Trailtrekker will keep tabs on road conditions and weather.

So lets plan on OV, with the option of Death Valley if conditions change. I don't think OV road closes, but since Horseshoe closed, and Whitney Portal is getting icy, we should have an alternate plan.

I sent an e-mail to those interested, so contact Trailtrekker or Trekker if you want to be added. For those on that e-mail, reply to all so everyone knows what's going on.

We'll plan on OV/Matlock Lake, but if things change, be prepared to go to DV. Hope this makes sense :retard:

Umm, I don't know why, but I didn't get the e mail with everybody's addy on it, so e mail me at metabulu@sbcglobal.net and we'll figure out whats up. I'm home this wknd so will be checking in on this. Trekker, I think yours is the only e mail I have.

I had a talk with the rangers at the Lone Pine station on Saturday, and they said the Onion Valley road is open, so based on NOAA forecasts, it will be open this weekend. They also said there was between 6' to 12' of snow at the trailhead, and had a report from a hiker of hip-deep snow on the trail to Kearsarge Pass! Temps this weekend will apparently be in the 40's, possibly dropping to the high teens at night. So warm clothes are essential, as are gaiters. Snowy will scout the trailhead on her way back from her bday celebrations, so we'll have a more first hand report.

I think you might have less snow to deal with than they reported - a lot of snow has melted off lately. You probably won't really be dealing with much snow until 11,000 to 12,000 feet - but that's my guess. This past weekend there wasn't much of any snow at 11,000 feet on the west side in Sequioa NP. It was cold at night though.

I am afraid i'm going to have to abort this trip. A co-worker and good friend has accepted a position at Hawaii Volcanoes Nat'l Park and his going away party is going to be on the 28th and it would be very uncooth for me to miss it.

Wingding is right about the snow. I hiked up to 11,100 on Saturday in the North Fork of Big Pine Creek area, and the snow never got deeper than 3 - 4 inches. I wish I could go!
